Admission overview
IIT Kanpur January 2027 research admissions
Applications are open for notified MS (By Research) and PhD programmes across engineering, science, humanities and interdisciplinary departments.
Dates and fees
- Opens: 16 October 2026, 2:00 PM.
- Deadline: 3 November 2026, 2:00 PM IST.
- Application fees are non-refundable. Submit a separate application for each programme/department.
Selection and financial support
Departments shortlist for written tests and/or interviews. Assistantship is available for eligible non-sponsored research students under institute rules. Sponsored/part-time/external routes have separate conditions.
How to apply
- Check the current programme list and department eligibility.
- Register on Pingala, complete the form and upload academic records, scorecards and relevant certificates.
- Pay the applicable fee, submit before 2 PM and retain the application.
Final-year applicants must be able to complete their programme by 4 January 2027. Use the official eligibility and admission pages for the full conditions.
Before you apply
Eligibility
Programme and department-specific degree, marks and national-test requirements apply. MS(R) generally accepts relevant engineering/medicine degrees, four-year science degrees or science/arts masters; three-year science/arts graduates with at least 75%/7.5 CPI may be considered. Regular MS(R) requires an accepted GATE/CSIR/JRF/NET/COGJET score, subject to notified exemptions. PhD requirements differ by discipline; consult the linked eligibility matrix.
